What is this warning?
Some products are affixed with a warning label or sticker reading: “WARNING: Consuming this product can expose you to chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.”
These warnings are provided pursuant to a California labeling law called Proposition 65 (or Prop 65 for short), which is meant to notify individuals in California of potential exposures to Prop 65-listed chemicals.
While selling products that contain any of the listed chemicals is not prohibited, any company that does business in California is required to notify consumers if any of their products contain a chemical that is listed on the Prop 65 list.
Why is this warning applied to some Golde products?
At Golde, we take special care to ensure that we follow all relevant regulations applicable to the places our product is purchased and used. For that reason, where appropriate, we label items sold to customers and retailers in the State of California with Prop 65 warnings to ensure compliance. We are dedicated to continuing to be a transparent company that you can trust to always provide the highest quality and safest products we can.
What types of chemicals and products are on the Prop 65 list?
There are over 900 chemicals on the Prop 65 list, which is updated at least once every year. Any chemicals that are regarded as reproductive toxicants or carcinogens are included on this list, even though some of these chemicals (lead, for example) are often found in nature and are not intentionally added to products.
How does Prop 65 compare to federal limits and the FDA?
Prop 65 warnings are required at levels that are more rigid than federal regulations. For example, lead.
- The FDA maximum daily intake for lead is 12.5 micrograms.
- The Prop 65 maximum daily intake for lead is 0.5 micrograms.
